PLANTING A NATIVE GARDEN
IN THE SUBTROPICS

by Jan Sked.
Published by Pine Rivers Branch of SGAP.

This 172-page book contains detailed descriptions and cultivation requirements of 800 Australian native plants suitable for growing in Brisbane, the Pine Rivers area and all subtropical coastal areas of Queensland and New South Wales. Plant descriptions are arranged according to growth form - ie. ground cover, rockery & bedding plants, shrubs, small trees, larger trees for parks and large gardens, climbers, palms & palm-like plants, ferns and orchids.

There are colour photographs and line drawings, plus chapters on planning a garden, cultivating and propagating native plants and creating a rainforest garden. Of particular benefit is the Quick Check Reference List, which gives at a glance such information as height and spread of plants, aspect and soil requirements, flowering season and flower and fruit colour, attraction to birds, and suitability for a rainforest garden.

This book is written in simple layman's terms, although all plants are listed by their botanical names, with common names being given where applicable. Each plant description has a simple pronunciation guide to help readers with the botanical names. It is highly recommended for anyone living on the east coast, from Rockhampton to Coff's Harbour, and should also prove a useful reference for the much wider area from Townsville to Sydney.
