VISITING THE GARDEN

Visitors are welcome to the Garden at any time - every day is an "Open Day". Please call on the caretakers for the latest on what's flowering and for a look through the Gallery. No manicured lawns here, so it is advisable to wear sturdy walking shoes and hat to enjoy the garden in comfort. The Garden is closed from 20th December to 20th January each year.

TRAILS THROUGH NATIVE BUSHLAND

The Lake View Trail - starts near the Gallery. Medium walking 1.5 km up and down the ridges and along the road looking over the lake. See several communities of naturally occurring plants.

DAVID GORDON

Myall Park Botanic Garden was started by Mr. David Gordon in the 1940s. With his wife, Dorothy, a well-known watercolourist, David Gordon assembled seeds and cuttings from all over Australia to form the basis of the 132 hectare site. Maintenance and development are now organised by the Myall Park Botanic Garden Company.

Three superb hybrid grevilleas named after Dave and Dorothy's daughters Robyn, Sandra and Merinda originated spontaneously in the garden at Myall Park. Dave gifted these plants to the nursery trade, and Grevilleas Robyn and Sandra Gordon are today widely represented throughout Australia.

Grenville Lucas, the Keeper of Kew Gardens, London, was particularly enthusiastic when he visited Myall Park Botanic garden in 1988, and he extended his stay to see more of what he described as our "magnificent collection of Australian plants."

A story of David Gordon and Myall Park Botanic Garden, "One Man's Dream", is available for sale at the gallery, as well as Dorothy Gordon's beautiful book "Australian Wildflower Paintings".

Myall Park Botanic Garden Ltd. , a non-profit company, was formed by friends and family.
It is run and managed by honorary Directors and assisted by volunteers.

SGAP Working-Bees

SGAP, led initially by the Gold Coast Branch, but including members from many branches, has run a working-bee at the Gardens each year since 1997. It is usually in April or May, after the summer heat but before the nights get too cool. Besides general garden maintenance, extensive machinery maintenance, and some mulch making, the Society has undertaken the development of a Hybrid grevillea garden in the Gallery precinct. With the help of Grower members, and members of the Grevillea Study Group who provided plants, this garden now boasts a floral display for most of the year.

For more information on this activity, or to see how you could become involved, call:

Peter or Lyn Reilly (07) 5537 3354 email plreilly@bigpond.net.au

Have a look at the thoughts that arose after one working-bee on the page SGAPers do make a difference.
