MT. GREVILLE

Lorna Murray

Mt Greville, located south-west of Lake Moogerah, is now included in the Lake Moogerah Peaks National Park of the Scenic Rim. The top and upper slopes of Mt Greville comprise this section of the National Park. A walking track, which first passes through private property, is used to access the Park.

This park, 769 metres high, is more easily climbed than many of the other peaks of the Fassifern District. There are no facilities available in the National Park, but the area can be explored satisfactorily in a day visit.

The Mt Greville section of the National Park includes a number of different plant communities including open eucalypt forest towards the base of the mountain, eucalypt forest with a dense shrubby understorey on top of the mountain, open heathland and shrubland on rock flows and clifflines near the top of the mountain, and rainforest and palm groves in the deep gorges. There is a rich diversity of plants in the area and the large areas of heathland and shrubland that are present contain several species of scientific significance.

Some of the notable recordings for this section of the National Park include Phebalium gracile and Comesperma breviflorum occurring in the heathland, Melaleuca groveana, Grevillea linsmithii and Westringia sericea in the understorey of the eucalypt forest, and Marsdenia hemiptera in the vine forest.

All of these species are rare or uncommon in south-east Queensland and some are endemic to the Boonah area. Other interesting species to be found in heath areas include Bossiaea rupicola, Acacia brunioides and striking specimens of Xanthorrhoea johnsonii. Two species of reed grass, Arundinella grevillensis and A. montana, are also endemic to the Boonah area.

An extensive plant list for this section of Lake Moogerah Peaks National Park has been prepared by botanists and is included in the booklet "Plant Lists of the Scenic Rim", edited by Paul I. Forster and Roslyn Burgess. This booklet contains 25 plant lists for specific areas in the Scenic Rim of south-east Queensland, and thus it is a most worthwhile publication for naturalists visiting any of these areas.

It can be purchased from the Sales Officer for $10.00, which includes postage.
