BILL TULLOCH MEMORIAL LECTURE

The Bill Tulloch Memorial Lecture is presented each year, either during the Regional Conference or, when there is no Regional Conference in a year, at a general meeting of the SGAP Queensland Region in Brisbane.

This annual lecture is held in honour of Bill Tulloch, a well loved and respected member of SGAP in recognition of his long and devoted service to our Society.

BILL TULLOCH 1904 - 1974

Bill Tulloch was an active and devoted members of the Society for Growing Australian Plants. He and his wife Agnes began their association with SGAP in Adelaide. In fact they were instrumental in the establishment of SGAP in South Australia, the inaugural meeting taking place in the Tulloch home in Adelaide on 9th April 1958. It was actually Agnes who was first interested in native plants, some time before Bill became involved.

They remained active in the South Australian Region until the family moved to Queensland in 1965 and Bill and Agnes became members of SGAP Queensland Region. Along with other activities, Bill organized and maintained the Seed Bank with meticulous care, from 1968 to 1972, and was always willing to advise and encourage others with his knowledge and enthusiasm. He corresponded with many members, supplying information about the seeds they requested. He propagated many thousands of native plants, which he passed on to others through friends and the Society.

Bill was one of the main instigators of our annual Spring Flower Show and he pressed for the inclusion of a plant sales section, for which he propagated the majority of the plants.

In April 1974 Bill and Agnes Tulloch were awarded Honorary Life Membership of the SGAP Queensland Region for their long and distinguished service to the Society.

When Bill passed away in June 1974, the Queensland Regional Council of SGAP decided to perpetuate his memory by instituting an annual Bill Tulloch Memorial Lecture.

ASGAP CONFERENCE 2005 - PERTH

While this is not a Queensland Region event it's included here for completeness. Those lucky enough to attend the 2004 Conference in Launceston were treated to a wonderful presentation on the delights in store at the next Conference. Our Western Australian coleagues showed us glimpses of the planned Pre and Post conference tours, and the interesting subjects for Seminar presentations.

Why not take a look for yourself by visiting their WEB SITE, BUT HURRY - bookings are now being taken and places are filling fast.

SGAP QUEENSLAND STATE CONFERENCE

State Conferences in Queensland are usually held every second year, either in Brisbane or a country centre. They usually consist of evening lectures and daytime visits to gardens, parks and other areas of botanic and scenic interest. Post Conference tours or camp-outs are organized to an area/s of major botanical interest.

These Conferences are wonderfully enjoyable and highly educational. They provide a forum for people from all over Queensland and other States who have an interest in our native flora.

The last Conference was hosted by the Gold Coast Branch of SGAP at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre, from 29th September to 4th October 2002, followed by a camp-out into northern New South Wales from 4th to 6th October.

This was a very well organized, informative and enjoyable Conference and Camp-out, and the Gold Coast Branch are to be congratulated for their fine effort. Evening lectures covered a diverse range of subjects with complimentary field trips during the day. People who attended heard about and were shown aspects of the Gold Coast and Hinterland that are not usually obvious to the general visitor, and came away with a new perspective of that popular holiday destination.

Watch for details of the next Queensland conference.

Traversing the primary dunes at Stradbroke Island - Couran Cove
Inspecting and discussing the flora of Broadwater National Park.
This is what Conferences are all about. If you have not attended one before, do make the effort for the next one. You will not regret it. So far a definite date and venue have not yet been set for the next Regional Conference. Watch the Region Activities page for information in the future.
